Anyone who remembers the invasion of Iraq just over 20 years ago might be struck with deja vu when looking at the news today. The illegal bombing of Iran that took place last night rings eerily similar to the military actions taken against Iraq when they were supposedly close to completing work on a nuclear weapon. But don’t worry! According to CNN,
“Iran is not Iraq and last night was not March 20, 2003, when America’s ill-fated invasion of that country began. There is no ground element to Trump’s ambition in Iran, and its goal was something widely supported by allies, and possibly within reach.”
What this fails to acknowledge is that the US, along with its coalition of allies, bombed Iraq in 1993, 1996, 1998, and 2001, all before the invasion even officially “began”. This bombing of Iran is a manifestation of the same warmongering imperialist forces that were present then, and were present long before throughout the United State’s bloody and destructive history of war. And what is the response from the Democrats? The self-proclaimed opposition to Trump? Well its seems that, according to Senior Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer, they are more upset about being left out of the loop than they are upset about the illegal strikes themselves, with Schumer stating,
“Confronting Iran’s ruthless campaign of terror, nuclear ambitions, and regional aggression demands strength, resolve, and strategic clarity.”
This warmongering needs to end. The Communist Party of Louisville stands fiercely against both the actions of the Trump administration, as well as the imperialist and bloodthirsty dogma of the US leaders at large. Make no mistake, these military actions cannot and will not make the world a safer place. In fact, these strikes serve the singular purpose of maintaining the US status as the worlds dominate global superpower — a position that they have protected through the murder of countless people across the entire globe.
The pain and suffering the US has reaped time and time again is for the express purpose of protecting the interests of the rich few, and will come at the cost of working people both across the globe and at home. The same forces which instill fear and dismay across the world have and will turn their guns towards us. All working-class people of America are a part of the same struggle faced by those under the boot of American military destruction. Their fate is the same as ours. If we fail to stand up and meet this moment, the atrocities committed by the United States and its allies will repeat themselves again and again, and we cannot let that happen.
